Syma
Ceramicist and mixed media artist, Syma received a B.S. in Psychology and Art from the University of Pittsburgh, and completed art courses from numerous prestigious institutions including the University of Paris, New York University, Harvard University, Columbia University, Hunter College, and many more. An innovative artist and art educator for more than thirty years, Syma has been a freelance museum educator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, led family art-making activities at the Asia Society Museum, intergenerational art-making workshops at MAD Museum, the Fuller Craft Museum, the Art Complex Museum in Duxbury, MA, and at the British Museum in London, England.
Since childhood her imagination has been ignited by artifacts and magical beliefs of early cultures. Studies of ancient ceremonial objects, Buddhist philosophies, as well as her psychology degree, form the roots of her studio practice. Works exhibited at Carter Burden Gallery include smoke fired ceramics with 24K gold leaf, figures and faces emerging from the clay’s surface, and interactive pieces that engage the viewer with music and poems.
Syma has exhibited extensively throughout the United States, as well as in Europe. She has received numerous grants and awards, including a two-time residency in the studios at the MAD Museum; a stipend from the US National Endowment for the Arts; an EARTHWATCH fellowship for an archaeological dig in Mallorca, Spain; a residency at A.I.R. Vallauris, France. Her works are in many public and private collections including: Sydney and Anne Levinsonm, Michael Heller, Heller Gallery, NY; Philadelphia University, Philadelphia, PA; Yuko Nii Foundation, Brooklyn, NY; Art Complex Museum, Duxbury, MA; and more.
