Stewart Siskind
Stewart Siskind has been intrigued by the elements of printed matter ever since he worked as an art director in New York City. His love of the medium has inspired him to breathe new life and meaning into discarded material by creating collages from torn paper that resonate with bold graphic structures and subtle psychological undercurrents.
Inspired by design, fashion and architecture, each collage is hand crafted with printed paper and infinite precision. Found materials recycled into compositions creating a lively exchange with new dimensions. Shapes and patterns emerge like puzzle pieces arranged to create encounters between figure and ground.
The juxtapositions of disparate elements create a parallel tension that is both amusing and disturbing.
Siskind's black and white photographs are inspired by travel to Italy, his collage work and study of photography. The artist uses his photography as a key element when doing digital collage. His use of framing and fascination with texture lend themselves well to final photographs rich in tone and composition.
Stewart Siskind earned a BFA in Graphic Design from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan and did postgraduate studies in design and color theory at New York University and Parsons School of Design. Siskind's work has received numerous awards for art direction and design and has been published in several professional journals. Two posters the artist designed are in the permanent collection of The Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
A native of Brooklyn, Siskind currently lives and works in Manhattan and is constantly inspired everywhere in New York City.
