Peter Malone
A native of NYC, Peter Malone, b. 1950, received degrees from the School of Visual Arts and Teachers College, Columbia University. As Assistant Professor and later as Art Gallery Director at Kingsborough Community College, CUNY, positions from which he retired in 2014, he curated exhibitions and taught both painting and art history courses. He currently maintains a studio north of the city and writes gallery and museum reviews for Hyperallergic, Artcritical and Hamptons Art Hub.
In this ongoing series of new paintings, he combines image with text. Carefully painted landscape and other subjects are accompanied by phrases that read as fragments of a larger narrative. The narrative and the figures suggested by that narrative are either invisible or barely indicated, yet the voice implied by each fragment relates to or responds to the painted image directly. Some canvases suggest emotional distress, others humor. The range of sentiment is purposefully broad.
Peter Malone has exhibited in the USA and abroad since 1985, participating in exhibitions at the Butler Institute of American Art, Blue Mountain Gallery, the Painting Center, Gallery Henoch, Pratt Institute, Southern Vermont Arts Center, Grace Borgenicht Gallery, the Islip Art Museum, the National Academy of Design, the Munson-Williams-Proctor Museum of Art, and other venues. He has been the recipient of grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and from PSC-CUNY Research Foundation. Collections include Munson-Williams-Proctor Museum of Art, Utica, NY; Elizabeth deC. Wilson Museum, Manchester, VT; Dominion Bankshares, Roanoke, VA; Ketchum Communications, Pittsburgh, PA; and ITT Hartford Insurance Co., Hartford, CT.
