Carter Burden Gallery presents three new exhibitions: Chanting on the Edge of the Volcano in the East Gallery featuring Edgar Franceschi and Angela Valeria, Color and Meaning in the West Gallery featuring Mona Brody and Alyce Gottesman, and On the Wall featuring Sumayyah Samaha. The reception will be held November 2, 2017 from 6 - 8 p.m. The exhibition runs from November 2nd through 22nd at 548 West 28th Street in New York City. The gallery hours are Tuesday - Friday, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Mona Brody

In the exhibition Color and Meaning Mona Brody presents an installation of over forty abstract, muted paintings and haiku poems from her series entitled The Colors of Silence. Brody’s personal experience writings, and biography shape the nature of the works, encouraging viewers to think about their own associations with themes of memory, personal histories, and time. The artist states, “The intentional quality of the sublime emerges at the heart of this work. The metaphoric possibilities that result from the collection and discovery of natural objects, the physical space of the canvas, and the interaction of materials reveal the strange and uncanny place within the familiar.”

Edgar Franceschi

Edgar Franceschi presents stoneware sculptures that joltingly juxtapose Georgian silver luster porcelain pieces, Chinoiserie elements, and studio ceramics in the exhibition Chanting on the Edge of the Volcano. These new assemblage pieces present a fragmented and mutated world that contradicts the initial impression of serenity and stillness that they exude. Franceschi states, “The mantra for the viewer should be:Resist the impulse to interpret. Stare at them uncomprehendingly.”

Alyce Gottesman

Color and Meaning features the vivid and energetic paintings of Alyce Gottesman. Her process is both exploratory and considered, utilizing multiple materials on changeable surfaces she works through several paintings at once. Gottesman states, “ …Improvising with drawing, dripping, brushing paint until I get to a place with each piece that reflects a moment in time, the unexpected, as if captured in action” Her approach to painting is both experiential and experimental, and her interest is in expressing beauty and energy in the work.

Sumayyah Samaha

In her installation Age of Glitter and Deception for On the Wall Sumayyah Samaha addresses what she calls “the absurdity of our time” by utilizing lustrous but inexpensive aluminum foil to symbolize the disturbing hunger for material prosperity at any cost. Samaha’s identity above all is that of an artist. Following her own natural flow and expression she works abstractly, and over the years, she has built an extensive vocabulary with which she weaves her visual story.

Angela Valeria

In Chanting on the Edge of the Volcano Angela Valeria composes works that, whether dyed, painted or printed, explore the inseparable link between the human race and nature, and our reciprocal evolution with all the other life forms that share this planet. Inspired by deities of ancient religions, myths, and folklores, particularly the bird women and goddesses of pre-historic fertility cults. Her work combines animal and human features to let the spirits, often obscured from our eyes, emerge into existence.
